A Very Special Podcast
Episode #80: The Earth Day Special (1990)
What happens when you take two friends, a couple of drinks, and mix it together with a classic television series? You get A Very Special Podcast. Join hosts Patrick M. Dunn and Kat Halstead as they sip their wine and guide you on their nostalgic pop culture journey filled with ridiculous childhood tales and wild young adult adventures. This week we are covering The Earth Day Special (1990)!
So envision this, Mother Nature has fallen from the sky, planet Earth is in peril, and Meryl Streep walks into a bar to get away from it all. Believe it or not, this is just the beginning! Yes, this week Patrick and Kat navigate the choppy waters that was The Earth Day Special, starring everyone; including Morgan Freeman who Kat was convinced was a complete unknown in 1990 but according to post-recording internet research Patrick uncovered he won a Golden Globe for Driving Miss Daisy just months prior to this special airing. So, hashtag Kat Was Wrong.
Other segments include an appearance by Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and Tweety Bird during that awkward post-Mel Blanc era, Geena Davis wins a date with Rodney Dangerfield, and probably the coolest hip-hop collaboration any of us had ever seen (at this time).
If that’s not enough for you, we also learn that Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders was also in fact adapted into a television series. Plus we discuss the fine art of getting hit in the nuts for a cash prize, Richard Grieco’s short-lived 21 Jump Street spinoff, and music teachers who looked like Jerry Garcia before he got a little touch of grey.
