What happens when you take two friends, a couple of drinks, and mix them all together with classic television? You get A Very Special Podcast. Join hosts Patrick M. Dunn and Kat Halstead as they sip their wine and guide you on their nostalgic pop culture journey filled with ridiculous childhood tales and wild young adult adventures.
So, Patrick and Kat decided to switch things up and take a brief step away from their usual romp through television history to bring you their very first book club. Envision what Oprah Winfrey did all those years but less couch jumping and more coffee. Yes, we literally recorded this episode just mere minutes after Patrick had rubbed the sleep from his tender eyes. With the amount of java he poured down his gullet he might as well have had an IV line of caffeine straight into his veins.
Anyway, to kick off their inaugural book club celebration, Patrick M. Dunn and Kat Halstead dusted the cobwebs off their vintage paperback copies of the first book in Francine Pascal’s Sweet Valley High series, Double Love! We get our first glimpse into the petty rivalry between Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield who are both pining after the same boy, Todd Wilkins! To make matters worse, some wild drunken teenage adventures when Jessica inadvertently gets into the car with bad boy Rick Andover and the two swing by Kelly’s Roadhouse, the hottest dive bar in all of Sweet Valley! Basically it becomes a huge scandal when the local gossip girl, Caroline Pearce, mistakingly outs Elizabeth Wakefield as the town’s troubled teen instead of Jessica. Oh, how will they ever get out of this mess?
Plus, some sidebar discussion of the classic early 90s teenage daytime drama, Swans Crossing. Followed by a fun jaunt through Francine Pascal’s start as a writer for the 1960s daytime drama The Young Marrieds. And being pro Tiffani Amber Thiessen after some not-so-fun comments from former Beverly Hills, 90210 costars Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling.
